Meet life on Earth.

Every species, its story, its size beside you — and where people have met it. Every line with its source.

Explore by group

Whales & dolphins — The largest animals that have ever lived — and the cleverest hunters of the sea.
Seals & sea cows — Mammals that went back to the sea, and still come ashore.
Land mammals — From lynx to elephant: warm-blooded life on land.
Birds — The living dinosaurs — measured by their wings.
Fish — Over half of all backboned animals swim.
Sharks & rays — Cartilage, not bone — older than trees.
Reptiles — Turtles, lizards, snakes and crocodiles.
Amphibians — Two lives: in water, then on land.
Insects — Most of the animal species we know are insects.
Shells, crabs & more — Molluscs, crustaceans, corals — life without a backbone.
Trees & plants — The green that feeds almost everything else.
Fungi — Neither plant nor animal — the network beneath the forest.
